Although every Web visitor has his or her own way of accessing the Internet, it helps if you know the general categories of people who regularly use the Internet. There are all together 8 different categories  - simplifiers, surfers, newbies, bargainers, traditionalists, sportsters, information diggers and gamesters and interaction seekers.   Knowing these 8 categories can help you tremendously in deciding on your website promotion and site-building tactics.

Simplifiers

They use the Internet especially the search engines to make life easier for them in some way. Their mind has already set a specific purpose on what they want. They will connect and log off immediately after finding what they want from the Internet. In order to hook them, your websites must provide clean, uncluttered content. Ease of website navigation is very important to simplifiers. The key is to make the product information available and simple to access. Your return policies and customer service policies must be readily available and spelled out clearly.

Surfers

Surfers drove the internet at one time. They move quickly from one website to another, seeking for new experiences. These people are stimuli junkies and are always looking for something new, constantly downloading new gizmos and hit-tech features. To attract these people, you will need a cutting-edge website design and gee-whiz effects. These people get bored and uninterested unless you update your website frequently. However take note that they do not like to spend money. They consider the Internet a free entertainment and feel that it is their entitlement for owning a computer and being on the forefront of new technology.  Attracting them means having cutting-edge design and features, constant updates, a strong online brand, and an assortment of products and services.  Advantage if able to have high search engine ranking.

Newbies

The new kids on the block. They are new to the Internet and, often, new to the computers in general. Their favorite features are email and chat rooms. Newbies tend to go after specific subject matter and will return to the websites that they enjoy. So it is relatively easy to keep them coming back to your website. Newbies are often afraid of their computers and are not willing to click on unfamiliar elements. To reach out to them, keep your website simple and ensure that you're listed high in the search engines. Provide a guide and good navigational instructions to assist them every step of the way. Keep your website warm and novice friendly. If you want them to click on a link, by all means, say it clearly and unambiguously "Click here". It is very easy to scare of a newbie but they will be incredibly loyal if you put them at ease.  To be listed high in search engines, crucial to have a proper search engine promotion activities.
